Why is Iron important in our diet?



Iron is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in our bodies. It is necessary for the production of hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body. Iron is also involved in various enzymatic reactions and supports the immune system.

When someone is deficient in iron, they may experience a condition called iron deficiency anemia. This occurs when the body doesn't have enough iron to produce adequate amounts of hemoglobin. Iron deficiency anemia can lead to a range of symptoms, including:


  1. Fatigue and weakness: Without sufficient hemoglobin to transport oxygen, the body's cells and tissues receive less oxygen, resulting in feelings of tiredness and weakness.

  2. Pale skin and mucous membranes: A lack of iron can cause a decrease in red blood cells, leading to pale skin, lips, and the inside of the eyelids.

  3. Shortness of breath: Oxygen-carrying capacity is reduced, which can result in breathlessness, especially during physical exertion.

  4. Poor concentration and cognitive difficulties: Inadequate oxygen supply to the brain can affect cognitive functions, including memory, focus, and overall mental performance.

  5. Decreased immune function: Iron deficiency can weaken the immune system, making individuals more susceptible to infections.

  6. Brittle nails and hair loss: Insufficient iron levels may lead to brittle nails that break easily, as well as hair loss or thinning.

  7. Restless legs syndrome: Iron deficiency has been associated with restless legs syndrome, causing uncomfortable sensations in the legs and an irresistible urge to move them.

It's important to note that iron deficiency can have various causes, including inadequate dietary intake, poor absorption of iron in the gut, increased iron requirements (such as during pregnancy or growth spurts), or chronic blood loss (from menstruation, gastrointestinal bleeding, or other sources). If you suspect an iron deficiency, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and guidance on appropriate treatment, which may include iron supplementation and dietary changes.
